Alan Savan studierte Elektrotechnik und Werkstoffwissenschaften am Massachusetts Institue of Technology (M.I.T.) in Cambridge, USA und schloss 1980 Bachelorabschlüsse in beiden Fachgebieten ab. 1982 erlangte er seinen Mastertitel als Ingenieur der Werkstoffwissenschaften an der Stanford Universität. Nachfolgend arbeitet er für die Firma Plasma-Therm inc. im Bereich des reactive ion etch (RIE) sowie der plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). 1983 begann er für Vaian Associates in Palo Alto in Kalifornien als process development engineer für physical vapor deposition (PVD) zu arbeiten. 1986 wechselte er in die niederländische Abteilung von Varian Benelux in Amsterdam, wo er seine Arbeit an der Prozesssteuerung von PVD und CVD Prozessen fortsetzte. Nachdem er 1990 seine Arbeit an dem Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology (CSEM) begonnen hatte und weiteren Arbeiten zu Mikro- und Nanostrukturierten Materialien, wechselte er 2004 zur Forschungsgruppe für Kombinatorische Materialforschung von Prof. Dr.-Ing. A. Ludwig.
